Mission of the Town Clerk’s Office

The Southborough Town Clerk’s Office is committed to providing courteous, competent and efficient service to the Towns People. We are dedicated to the thorough preservation of the Town’s vital records and historical documents for the benefit of future generations. We respect the right to vote as a fundamental civil right and will assure that all elections are conducted in a fair and open manner providing equal access to all citizens. Our office will operate in a modern, professional and automated environment, with an emphasis on our fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers of Southborough.

Voter Registration


LOCALLY
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 is the last day to register to vote for the Annual Town Meeting & Annual Town Election. Clerk’s Office open until 8pm.

ANNUAL TOWN MEETING - Monday April 14th 7pm
Trottier Middle School, 49 Parkerville Road.

ANNUAL TOWN ELECTION Monday May 12th
POLLS OPEN 8am – 8pm.

All Southborough residents are eligible to vote if they will be at least eighteen years of age as of the Town Meeting Date or Town Election. You must show a form of ID with proof of residency in Southborough. You may mail in a Voter Registration card (available through our office) or come in person. The registration deadline is 20 days prior to an election for Town Elections and 20 days prior to a State Election.
NOTE: the annual Census is NOT a voter registration form.

    • Precinct 3 Mary E. Finn School, 60 Richards Rd

Notary Public

    Notary Public services are available in the office of the Town Clerk.  Identification must be provided by the individual prior to endorsing the document.


Birth, Marriage, and Death Certificates

 Please call to order your Long Form.  We only issue a "True Copy Attest" of each certificate.  It will have a raised seal which constitutes an original document.

  • Birth Certificates are available for births dating from 1727 to the present for any person born in Southborough or whose parents resided in Southborough when they were born.
  • Marriage Certificates are available for records dated from 1727 to the present. The Town Clerk has the records for couples who filed their marriage intention in Southborough.
  • Death Certificates are available for records dated from 1727 to the present. The Town Clerk has records for any individual who died in Southborough or who resided in Southborough at the time of their death.

Marriage Licenses  
    To apply for a marriage license, both parties must appear in person together at the Town Clerk’s Office. Each must be at least (18) eighteen years of age. If under the age of (18) eighteen they must obtain a court order from a probate or district court. There is a mandatory 3-day waiting period from the date the Intention is filed. This date can only be waived with a court order. The Intention is valid for 60 days and can be used to marry in any city or town within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.


Genealogy Searches:  we will assist citizens with genealogy searches.  Please call for an appointment.

Permits:  the following permits are available at the Town Clerk's

  • Bazaar
  • Auctioneer


Dog Licenses:  2008 will be available March 1st. The licensing period is April 1st – March 31st. All dogs six months of age and older must be licensed with the Town Clerk.

A $10 late fee will be charged for each dog not licensed by June 1st, plus penalties.

Puppies:
New puppies over 6 months - 30 days to license
NEW to Town:
just moved to Southborough - 30 days to license.

Current rabies vaccination must be provided.

Loose Dogs: Animal Control Officer, Leslie Boardman: 508.485.7817
Leash Law: All dogs in Southborough must be in control at all times. Any dog found to be in violation and picked up by the Animal Control Officer will be subject to an initial fine of $15.00 plus boarding fees.

Business Certificates (DBA)
    Business Certificates cost $10.  "Doing Business As" certificates must be filed with the Town Clerk for any business located in Southborough that is conducting business under a name other than one’s own. The certificate is valid for (4) four years from the date filed.
Fishing/Sporting Licenses
    Available in the Town Clerk’s Office (not by mail). Licenses are valid through December 31. You must have a valid FID (Firearms Identification Card) when purchasing a hunting or sporting license. You must have a license starting at age fifteen. Citizens over 70 years of age are free of charge.

    Fishing and Hunting Fees:
    • Fishing $12.50 (age 15-17)
    • Fishing $28.50 (age 18-64)
    • Fishing $17.25 (age 65-69)
    • Sporting $26.00 (age 65-69)
    • Sporting $46.00 (age 18-64)
