Don't Let Depression Go Too Far..

Rose are red, violets are blue...

Valentine's Day is a time to celebrate with friends, eat heart-shaped candies and spend time with that special someone.

But what if you don't feel like celebrating? What if all those hearts, cupids, and pictures of romantic couples kissing make you feel sad, hopeless, lonely, and anxious?

Everyone feels sad or unhappy sometimes, but if those feelings last for more than two weeks, or affect your ability to sleep, work, or relate to others, you may be suffering from depression, a common, yet serious illness that affects more than 19 million Americans each year. When untreated, depression can take a toll on individuals and families -- leading to disability, dependency and possibly suicide.

Other symptoms of depression include:

Persistent sad, anxious or "empty" feelings
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and/or helplessness
Irritability, restlessness
Loss of interest in activities or hobbies that were once pleasurable, including sex
Fatigue and decreased energy
Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions
Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping

If you have been feeling down and not like your usual self this Valentine's Day, Southborough Youth and Family Services invites you to take advantage of free, anonymous online mental health self-assessments.
